Master program in Ibero-American studies


The M.A. programme of the Ibero-Americn studies aims at presenting the students with a with a general overview of the history and culture of Latin America, as well as with the abilities to evaluate critically the information and add new facts to the general picture. The graduates assert in various fields of culture, journalism, diplomacy, tourism, academia.

As the M.A. programme is intended mostly for Czech students, also the majority of the courses is taught in Czech; only several courses in Spanish are offered.

The admission requierements

Completion of B.A. studies at any Czech university, or its equivalent (considered as such by the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic); oral exam of the history, geography and culture of Latin America that proves the basic orientation of the applicant in periodization of American history, human and economic geography of the continent and the cultural development. The exam is public with the participation of the three-member examining board, at least.


Phd. program in Ibero-American studies

The Ph.D. Studies Programme in the Ibero-American Studies is the continution of the programme of the Master of the Ibero-American Studies. It is providing to the students the possibility of the specialization in the history and the culture of the region, which has increased in political, economic and cultural importance in the last decades, and it will indoubtedly increase in the future. The programme of these studies is divided into four principal parts (history of the Latin America, native societies, geography and culture). It has an indisciplinary character, it consists of the activities of the teachers of different universities and science centers and the individual work is really emphasized. It is concluded by a state exam and the defence of the doctoral dissertation, which can be published in Czech, Spanish, Portuguese or English languages.

The Ph.D. studies programme in Ibero-American Studies is realized in the form of an individual studying plan, prepared by the tutor in cooperation with the student and approved by the chariman of the department, which is focussed on the deeping of the common theoretical knowledge of the student, as well as the special knowledges connected with the theme of the thesis. Obligatory oral exams include at least two branch exams, focused on the broader context of the studied problem, the language exam (English language obligatory, other languages optional), and obligatory choice of one of two exams, either philosophy (in the form of essay), or methodology of scientific work. Also, studnets are required to také part in weekly doctoral seminary, where they discuss projects of tehri colleagues and every year present the developpment of their dissertation. The individual studying programme is approved by the tutor and the chairman of the branch board. Written report evaluating the fulfilling of the study duties and other activities of the student is prepared every year.

The admission requierements

Completion of M.A. studies at any Czech university, or its equivalent (considered as such by the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic); presentation of project of dissertation, sopecifying the research quetsion, proposed methods and hypotheses; oral exam taht ascertaines the broader knowledge of the applicant as for wider context of proposed theme, the relevant literature and results already achieved by scientific research in the field. Besides, the candidate presents in written form his professional CV and the list of already published works. The exam is public with the participation of the three-member examining board, at least.
